Black Point Battery San Francisco Marina area location has an excellent view of the East Bay.
|Description||Located in Upper Fort Mason, behind the Youth Hostel, this bluff offers views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. The authentic Civil War Rodman cannon here lends a sense of history to the setting. There is a small group of picnic tables available at this site.|
|Of Note||Black Point Battery was named for the dark laurel trees that silhouetted the bluff. The buildings you will pass on your way to this site date back to the Gold Rush and were occupied by the Army during the Civil War. Black Point Battery is the only intact temporary Civil War fortification on the west coast.|

From Freeway 101 Traveling South or 19th Avenue/Highway 1 Traveling North: Follow signs for 101 South/Lombard Street. Follow Lombard Street to Van Ness Avenue and turn left. Follow Van Ness north until you reach Bay Street and turn left. The next intersection you reach will be Franklin Street. Turn right on Franklin Street into Fort Mason. From Freeway 80 Traveling West: Follow signs for Freeway 101 North/Golden Gate Bridge. You will exit onto Van Ness Avenue. Follow Van Ness Avenue several miles north until you reach Bay Street and turn left. The next intersection you reach will be Franklin Street. Turn right on Franklin Street into Fort Mason. Directions Continued: Driving in to Fort Mason you will see a chapel. Veer to the left of the chapel onto Pope Street and find parking on the side of the street. To access Black Point Battery, continue walking to the end of Pope Street where it dead ends at the San Francisco Youth Hostel. Black Point Battery is directly behind the Youth Hostel and you may access from either side. If you turn right to walk behind the Youth Hostel, you will descend stairs to the site. If you turn left to walk behind the Youth Hostel, you will walk down an access road to the site, which may be easier for guests with disabilities.
